Multi-Purpose Adhesive

JM400

JM400

JM400 Multipurpose Adhesive is a superior performing high solids, water based floorcovering adhesive offering fast wet grab and strong final bond.

The adhesive is designed to suit a wide range of carpets and some vinyls. This includes carpets with hard to bond synthetic backings, such as latex/unitary or Action-Bac as well as Axminsters and jute hessian backed.

The adhesive is easy to spread, is suitable for use over normal underfloor heating installations, and will withstand normal wet cleaning techniques.

USES

JM400 can be used to install the following: Carpets: Jute secondary backed, Axminster, Wilton, synthetic secondary backed, needlepunch/fibrebonded, latex/unitary backed, Action-Bac, latex foam, gel back, felt back and bitumen/non woven backed. For carpets recommended for “double stick” systems the JM400 is an ideal permanent bond adhesive. Hard/Resilient Floorcoverings: Vinyl tiles to BS 3260 / EN654 and BS3261B Selected sheet vinyl Vinyl Composition Do NOT use for: Urethane backed carpets

SUBFLOORS

Suitable subfloors include concrete, sand/cement screed, smoothing underlayment, plyboard, flooring grade chipboard, hardboard, wood and existing well bonded resilient flooring. Note: There are certain grades of flooring grade chipboard that have been treated with paraffin wax to provide a waterproof quality. These types of chipboards are not suitable for use with this adhesive With existing well bonded resilient flooring care must be taken to ensure the subfloor under the resilient flooring is sound and the surface of the resilient flooring is thoroughly cleaned of any polish etc. If this cannot be done, the existing resilient flooring must be removed and the subfloor made good before proceeding.

PREPARATION

All parts of the installation should comply with the latest edition of the following British Standard Code of Practice: BS5325 The Installation of Textile Floorcoverings or BS8203 The Installation of Resilient Floorcoverings. Another useful source of reference is The CFA Guide to Contract Flooring. Subfloors should be sound, smooth, clean, dry and free from any contamination which will affect adhesion. Relative humidity of cementitious subfloors should be 75% or less (when tested by the method described in BS8203). Direct to earth bases must incorporate an effective damp proof membrane. Underfloor heating must be switched off for 48 hours before and after the installation. Very absorbent surfaces should be primed with a suitable sealer.

APPLICATION

For best results a minimum temperature of 18°C (65°F) should be maintained for the installation. An appropriate V notched trowel should be used to apply the adhesive evenly. For most carpets a 2.0mm x 6.0mm or MT-B1 will be suitable. However, for rough backed or ribbed carpet a 3.0mm x 6.0mm or MT-B2 trowel is recommended and for smooth floorcoverings a 1.5mm x 5.0mm or MT-A2 should be used. Trowels should be cleaned after use with water whilst the adhesive is still wet. Apply adhesive evenly to an area of such size that the floorcoverings can be laid whilst the adhesive is receptive and gives good transfer (usually whilst the adhesive is still wet). When installing an impervious floorcovering onto a well sealed subfloor allow the adhesive to develop a slight tack or employ a “double drop” technique to reduce the waiting time before laying. Unless the floorcovering manufacturer recommends otherwise the entire installation should be rolled or weighted glider applied in both directions immediately the installation is complete to remove any trapped air and ensure good adhesive transfer. It may be necessary on some floorcoverings to roll a second time, approximately 1 hour later, to ensure a strong bond is established.

HEALTH & SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Refer to Material Safety Data Sheet and follow the advice given. Ensure area of use is well ventilated. Avoid prolonged contact with skin and if sensitive, use barrier cream or gloves. In case of contact with eyes, mouth or nose, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical help. If adhesive is spilled, remove and dispose of it in accordance with national and local regulations for waste materials.
